SPF and Moisturizer: What Order to Apply (The Simple Rule)

If you only remember one thing: moisturizer first, SPF last. That's it. Everything else is details.

Why Order Matters

Skincare products work in layers. Each layer needs to touch the skin directly to do its job. If you put SPF on first and then moisturizer over it, the moisturizer sits on top of the SPF and the SPF can't protect your skin properly.

It's like putting sunscreen on your shirt instead of your skin. The shirt gets protected. You don't.

The Exact Order for Teens

Morning Routine (45 Seconds): Face Wash → Pat Dry → Face Lotion → SPF

That's it. Four steps. Under a minute.

Step 1: Face Wash

One pump. 20 seconds. Rinse. Pat dry. Same as always.

Step 2: Face Lotion

A couple pumps on damp skin. Spread. Let it absorb for about 10 seconds. It should feel hydrated — that's good. It means it's creating a base layer.

Our Face Lotion is oil-control and non-comedogenic. It hydrates without adding shine, which is important because the next step is SPF — and SPF on oily skin is still needed.

Step 3: SPF

This is where most teens drop off. "SPF is for the beach." "I don't burn." "It feels greasy."

Here's the thing: UV damage happens every day, not just sunny days. Windows don't block UVA. Clouds don't block UVB. Teen skin is more vulnerable to sun damage than adult skin because the protective mechanisms are still developing.

Look for a minimum of an SPF 30 that's labelled "non-comedogenic" and "oil-free." Apply a quarter size amount to your face after the lotion has absorbed. Spread it evenly and be sure to get your neck, back of neck and ears,  Let it settle.

What About JB SKRUB and SPF?

Our Face Lotion doesn't contain SPF.

SPF ingredients can irritate sensitive teen skin, and they change how a moisturizer feels. We wanted our lotion to be gentle, fragrance-free, and suitable for twice-daily use — morning and night.

At night, you don't need SPF. Just wash and moisturize. In the morning, add your SPF after the lotion.

This two-step approach gives you control. You choose the SPF that works for your skin. Some teens prefer mineral SPF. Others prefer chemical. Our lotion works with either.

The Night Routine (Even Simpler)

Night Routine (30 Seconds): Face Wash → Pat Dry → Face Lotion

No SPF at night. Your skin repairs itself while you sleep.

Night is when your skin actually heals. Oil production drops. Cell turnover increases. This is when the moisturizer does its best work — supporting the skin's natural repair process without competing with SPF ingredients.

What If My Teen Won't Use SPF?

Honestly? Most don't, and at least not consistently. This is okay — as long as they're washing and moisturizing.

If you can get them to use SPF on sunny days, sports days, and beach days, that's a win. Daily SPF is the gold standard, but partial compliance is better than zero compliance.

My son uses SPF about 60% of the time. The other 40%, I don't stress about it. He's washing and moisturising twice daily. That's the foundation. SPF is the bonus layer.

The Bottom Line

Order: wash → moisturise → SPF. At night, skip the SPF. Keep it simple. Make it automatic. And don't stress if your teen isn't perfect — consistency over time beats perfection for a day.
