Why JB SKRUB Is Fragrance-Free (And Why It Matters for Teen Skin)

I used to buy "lightly scented" products thinking they were gentler. Then my son's eyes watered every time he washed his face. Turns out, "lightly scented" still means added fragrance. Here's what I learned.

Fragrance Is the #1 Skin Irritant

Not sulfates. Not parabens. Fragrance. It's the single most common cause of allergic reactions, skin irritation, and contact dermatitis in skincare products.

And here's the thing: fragrance doesn't DO anything for your skin. It doesn't clean. It doesn't moisturize. It doesn't protect. It just smells nice, and sometimes masks the other ingredient scents. That's it.

So why do brands add it? Because consumers think "smells good" means "works good." It's marketing, not medicine. And teen skin pays the price.

Why Teen Skin Is More Sensitive to Fragrance

Teen skin is thinner, more reactive, and still developing its protective barrier. An ingredient that an adult tolerates fine can cause redness, dryness, or breakouts on a teenager.

Plus, fragrance ingredients are often applied near the eyes — where skin is thinnest and most sensitive. Have you ever seen a teen rub their eyes after washing their face? That's often a reaction to fragrance, not tiredness.

Also- would you ever spray your face with your perfume???

"Fragrance-Free" vs "Unscented" — There's a Difference

Fragrance-free: No added fragrance ingredients at all. May still have a mild scent from the actual ingredients (like tea tree oil or aloe).

Unscented: Fragrance ingredients added to MASK the natural scent of other ingredients. Still contains fragrance — just disguised.

JB SKRUB face products are fragrance-free. No added scent. No masking ingredients. Just the natural, mild smell of the actual formulation, which most people describe as "barely noticeable."

But What About the Body Wash?

Our Body Wash does have a light citrus scent. Here's why that's different:

Body skin is thicker and less sensitive than face skin. The citrus scent comes from natural essential oils, specifically Orange Peel oil, not synthetic fragrance compounds. Additionally, Body Wash is washed off,  not left sitting on skin like a lotion or serum.

We made a deliberate choice: fragrance-free for the face (where sensitivity is highest), light natural scent for the body (where it provides a fresh, clean feeling without irritation).

What "Natural Fragrance" Really Means

Some brands claim "natural fragrance" as if that makes it safer. But natural fragrance can be just as irritating as synthetic. Essential oils, even natural ones contain compounds that trigger reactions in sensitive skin.

Lavender, citrus, mint, eucalyptus — all natural. All capable of causing irritation, especially on developing skin.

That's why we don't hide behind "natural" buzzwords. We just skip added fragrance entirely where it matters most: the face.

The Bottom Line

Fragrance doesn't improve skincare. It just makes it smell better, and for teen skin, which is already dealing with hormones, oil, and sensitivity — added fragrance is an unnecessary risk.

Our Face Lotion is fragrance-free because your teen's face deserves products that work, not products that perfume.
