While having lunch with girlfriends, we all told the horror stories of what we discovered once our sons returned home from sleepaway camp. One friend share her son went to basketball camp with one bar of soap. He came home smelling like a musty damp towel and covered in back acne. Never again. Here's what active teens actually need for multi-day camps.
Why Camp Skincare Is Different
Summer camps create a perfect storm for skin problems: intense daily activity, shared bathrooms, limited hot water, bunk beds that aren't washed for weeks, and teens who are too tired to care.
The result? Body acne, face breakouts, and odor that makes you question whether that smell is actually coming from your child or the camp itself. (Spoiler: it's both.)
The Camp Skincare Kit
✅ The Essentials (Pack These No Matter What)
For morning and night, every single day. No exceptions.
Swipe after washing in the morning, night, and post-activity (with or without face wash depending on how grimy they are).
Hot camp showers strip moisture. Lake or pool water, plus the intense sun dries out skin. This moisturizer hydrates skin without adding shine.
Shared showers need individual body wash. Don't let them use whatever's there.
✓ Deodorant or Body Spray
Twice daily minimum. Morning and post-activity. Non-negotiable.
✓ Pimple Patches (full pack)
Camp breakouts are inevitable. These handle them overnight.
That's five products. Not fifteen. Not a "grooming kit." Just the basics that prevent the problems camp creates.
The JB SKRUB Camp Solution
Our Ultimate Kit was basically designed for this scenario. It includes Face Wash, Face Lotion, Face Pads, Body Wash, Body Spray, Pimple Patches, and a toiletry bag — everything a teen needs for a week away, in one compact package.
The Camp Skincare Routine (Under 5 Minutes)
Teens won't do a 15-minute routine at camp. They barely do it at home. Here's what they'll actually comply with:
Morning (2 minutes): Wash face. Wipe with the Face Pads. Apply Face Lotion. Deodorant. Done.
Post-Activity (3 minutes): Shower with Body Wash. Wash face and/or wipe with the Face Pads. Deodorant. Done.
Night (2 minutes): Wash face. Wipe with the Face Pads. Apply lotion. Pimple patch if needed. Done.
Under 5 minutes total. That's realistic. That's doable, and it prevents the camp-skin disaster.
What Parents Should Tell Camp Counsellors
If your teen has skin sensitivities or specific needs, tell the counsellors. Most camps have basic first-aid supplies but not skincare products. A heads-up helps.
Also: label everything. Camp is where toiletries go to die. A labelled toiletry bag has a 70% better survival rate than an unlabelled one. (I made that statistic up, but it's true.)
The Bottom Line
Camp is supposed to be fun. Skin problems make it less fun. A compact kit, a simple routine, and labelled products solve 90% of camp skincare issues. The other 10%? That's just teenagers being teenagers.
