SULFATE Free- Do you hear and read this too?  What is wrong with Sulfates? I know my stylist told me to avoid them to save color.  Then I learned the truth: they're not dangerous, they're just too strong for daily use on developing skin. Here's what we actually avoid in JB SKRUB products — and why.

What We Skip and Why

❌ Sulfates (SLS/SLES)

Why we skip them: They’re aggressive cleansers that can be too harsh and strip developing skin of its natural protective oils. They’re not dangerous—just unnecessarily harsh for daily use by teens.

What we use instead: Gentle, sulfate-free surfactants that clean effectively without stripping. Your skin stays clean AND protected.

❌ Artificial - Synthetic Fragrances

Why we skip them: Fragrance is the #1 cause of skin irritation and allergic reactions. Teen skin is more sensitive than adult skin, making fragrance a bigger risk. Even worse- some synthetic fragrances can contain hormone-disrupting chemicals.

What we use instead: The majority of our products are fragrance-free. The Face Lotion, Face Wash, and Face Pads are completely fragrance-free. Our Body Wash and Shampoo use a light natural citrus scent from essential oils, — not synthetic chemical fragrance.

❌ Harsh Alcohols

Why we skip them: Denatured alcohol and isopropyl alcohol dry out skin, damage the protective barrier, and can actually trigger MORE oil production as skin compensates.

What we use instead: Natural moisturizers and gentle natural preservatives that keep products fresh without drying skin.

❌ Parabens

Why we skip them: The science on parabens is mixed, but we as parents worry about them. Rather than debate, we simply use alternative preservatives.

What we use instead: Safe, effective preservatives that keep products fresh without the controversy.

❌ Physical Scrubs (Walnut Shell, Apricot Kernels)

Why we skip them: These create micro-tears in developing skin, increasing irritation and inflammation. Teen skin is already dealing with enough without added abrasion.

What we use instead: Gentle ingredients that aid with exfoliation through natural acids in our formulations — effective without the damage.

What We Include (And Why It Matters)

✅ Aloe Vera

Soothes skin, reduces redness, and provides lightweight hydration. Perfect for skin that's already stressed by hormones and activity.

✅ Chia Seed

Anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial prebiotic, rich in Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids that deeply hydrate skin.

We use Chia Seed in our Face Wash, Body Wash, and Body Spray. It soothes active skin stressed by sweat and sport, hydrates without clogging pores, and stops dryness.

✅ Green Tea

Calms and offers antioxidant benefits that protect the skin's barrier and help maintain a balanced scalp in our shampoo.

We use Green Tea in our Face Wash, Body Wash, and Shampoo — it shields active skin from environmental stress, soothes after sweat and sport, and keeps the scalp microbiome balanced against daily grime and product buildup.

✅ pH-Balanced Formulations

Teen skin is more alkaline than adult skin. Our products are formulated to match teen skin pH, maintaining the protective barrier rather than disrupting it.

The Honest Truth About "Clean" Beauty

Here's what most brands won't tell you: "clean" is a marketing term, not a scientific one. Water is a chemical. Vitamin C is a chemical. Everything is chemicals.

What actually matters: is the ingredient appropriate for the skin it's touching? Is it at the right concentration? Is it combined with complementary ingredients that support skin health?

That's what we focus on. Not buzzwords. Not fear. Just formulations that work for teen skin specifically.

The Bottom Line

You don't need to be a chemist to choose good skincare. Just look for: no sulfates, no artificial fragrance, no harsh alcohols, and ingredients that actually support developing skin.

Or just use JB SKRUB. We did the research so you don't have to.
